Tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe’vasthānam.
Then the Seer (Self) abides in Its own nature.
Sutra 1.3 The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

The foundational philosophy of yoga says that: We are the Universe experiencing itself.

It is one thing to think about this rationally, what it means to be one with the Universe, and it is another thing entirely to experience this. To realize this truth is the ultimate Yoga, to experience yourself as one with all this is, is the intent of the practice of Yoga.

For some, that realization may be instantaneous. For others it may take lifetimes of practice. I don’t know what your path is, but I do offer a practice exercise if you’d like to play with the conceptualization of this concept.

In order to conceptualize the interconnectedness of all things, we may choose to look for the universal nature of all things. This can be done from a variety of different frameworks. None are right or wrong, or better than another, it’s simply whatever resonates for you.

Option 1: Look for yourself in everything you see. How am I like that rock? How is that rock like me? How am I similar to that person that’s irritating me in the grocery store line? How are they similar to me? How am I the same as this puzzle that I cannot seem to solve? How is it similar to me? Etc.

Option 2: Look for the divine, or the God spark, in everything you see. How is that rock divine? What is the God nature of this person that’s irritating me in the grocery store line? What about this enigma of a puzzle is the divine incarnate? Etc.

Option 3: Look for the interconnectedness and similarities that flow between all things. How is this rock similar to the bumbling idiot of a person in the grocery store line ahead of me? And how are they both similar to that puzzling challenge that I just haven’t found the root of yet? Etc.

Whichever option resonates most with you, if you’re so inclined, take some time today, or tomorrow, or whenever to actively seek that interconnectedness.
